Short Stories
Story tells us how we engage with society. How we express ourselves. How we see the world.
Through story, I thought about how we move, how we observe, think, judge and act. To listen before speaking, to appreciate the world in its best light while being aware of its dangers; it's mysteries, its wonder, its landscapes and its cultures.
Writing is not so much didactic as it is poetic and humane.
The care with which we choose our words is what makes a child engage in the world - not with persistence but with pertinence. We are malleable yet exploring the world ourselves in that place between book and mind - without the need for skepticism and aggression.
With the power of story, we create a safe place where children and adults alike can suspend their own beliefs and therefore open themselves to what society requires of them - without the need for skepticism and brutality.
Writers provide an opportunity to live vicariously through their favourite characters, experiencing katharsis and valuable lessons - without the need to infantalise.
